Music is everywhere. It is the largest source of entertainment in the world, existing in various forms everywhere from unknown islands, to third world countries, to first world countries like America. Living in a first world country means we have access to the widest variety of music then anywhere else in the world with no more than the click of a button or the tap of a screen. This means we have access to the best kinds of music… and the worst.
Yet, it seems that the worse a song is, the more popular it is. Now, this is not always true. There are still people with good taste who keep good bands going. But how songs like “Scream and Shout” by will.i.am and Brittney Spears get to the top charts, I’ll never know. But, you have the choice of listening to that kind of music. You live in America (or some other first world country, since you have internet) for Pete’s sake!
Now, I’m not one of those old ladies who goes around telling everyone that hymns are the only good music left in this world, and everything else is of the Devil. Honestly, to those people out there, give me a break. God created music. It may be corrupted by sin, but so are you. If you are so holy, then music must be too. So, I’m not saying only listen to Christian music. Some of my favorite bands include Coldplay, Imagine Dragons, Miracle of Sound, and Muse. None of these bands are “Christian” bands, but they have perfectly good music. But, there is some music out there that I will ask why you listen to. I mean, what is the point in filling your head with crude language, graphic depictions of things like drugs, sex, stealing, lying, or other things the Bible calls sin? Give me one good reason. And “because it’s popular” or “because the I like the style” are invalid excuses. There is no such thing as a good or bad genre of music. Each genre of music has good, bad, and in between artists. You choose which ones you listen to. You like rap? Don’t listen to Kanye West, Lil’ Wayne, or other artists like that. Listen to Lecrae, KJ-52, P.O.D. or other rappers with a positive message. But don’t fill your head with garbage. There are plenty of good artists out there, and you can listen to them. Music is not going to make you popular. Music has so many variations, so many genres, that you have no valid excuse for filling your mind with trash.
